There are four men I follow on Substack who write about Judaism and Jewish things with enough frequency that I associate them with it. Nachman Oz is the only one hailing from Australia, whereas the other three (Baruch Hasofer, Gabriel/NonZionism, and King Salmon) all originated from various nations (U.S.S.R., U.K., U.S.) while ultimately converging on Israel. That is until recently when King Salmon left to move back to the U.S., which he chronicles here.
Like me, Mr. Salmon is an East Coast, millennial Jew born to a Silent Gen father but that’s where most of our commonalities that might be pertinent to the discussion become more muted. I have never been to Israel and do not practice very much but Mr. Salmon has had such a taste of Israel, he can happily leave, a distinction in knowledge which should help make our conversation relatively legible to you whether you happen to be a Member of the Tribe or not. While I am more Jewish than most of my subscribers, I’m still turbo secular.
While we cover some Jewish items, this episode should largely appeal to young men, especially those trying to figure things out with jobs or women. Before the paywall you get an account of enchantment and disenchantment with an exotic, mythological place filled with delicious food and beautiful women. After the paywall: A failure to live out the dream in Zion becomes an odyssey through time and space in which a young man rolls the dice, takes fire, and emerges with a bride and a stake in the world. Basically Right Wing Peace Corps.
